It's Not What You Say. It's How You Say It.

Thank you very much to my friend Shelly Alcorn for finding and sharing this great video.

Communication is one of the biggest challenges organizations of all shapes and sizes tend to face. When it comes to your nonprofit, communication is more than just sending out information. It's about:

  1. Making sure you are sending information that audience wants and needs
  2. Using communications vehicles (in-person, email, website, mail, blog, social media etc.) that 'fit' your intended audience
  3. Finding that fine balance between communicating too much and too little

As this video shows, however, the most important piece of the communicaitons puzzle is in the messaging. It's not what you're trying to say...It's how you say it that really determines the impact of your nonprofit communications.

Here are a couple of questions to mull over:

  • Do you have a good sense about the communications mix that works well for your members, donors and other key external stakeholders?
  • How do you create messaging that really hits home?
  • How do you know for sure that what you're doing is working..or not working?
